How to Face ID not working on iPhone after iOS 13.2.3 | Fix Face ID Issue


It seems like some iPhone owners have recently encountered a Face ID issue wherein they could no longer unlock their devices just by looking at it. Apple did a good job in making such feature work flawlessly and the problems that some owners may have encountered after the iOS 13.2.3 update may be isolated issues only.

Most of the time, this is just a pretty minor problem that you may be able to fix just by doing one or a couple of troubleshooting procedures but it all depends on how it started. If the Face ID issue started after your iPhone suffered a drop, then it’s a possible hardware issue. Or if the iPhone got wet and then this problem started, the problem could be due to a liquid damage. Fixing a Face ID issue on an iPhone with iOS 13.2.3

In this post, we will try to look into all possibilities and rule them out one after another until we can determine the reason why Face ID is not working anymore. If it’s just a firmware issue, then  you can make the feature function again once you’ve finished reading this article. Here’s what you need to do:

First solution: Force restart your iPhone

If the Face ID has been working properly prior to the update, then the problem could be just due to a pretty minor firmware issue. The first thing that you have to do is the forced restart. It’s a simulated battery removal that has been proven effective against issues like this. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, and then the Volume Down button.
  2. The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Side or Power key for 15 seconds or until the Apple logo shows on the screen.

Your iPhone will continue the usual boot process. When the reboot is complete, try to see if the Face ID is now working properly. If the Face ID issue remains, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Reset Face ID and set it up again

Perhaps the current Face ID has not been set up properly, or it might have been corrupted. The best thing to do is to delete the existing Face ID and set it up again. This has been the most effective solution to this problem according to some users.

  1. To access Face ID, launch Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down to find Face ID and Passcode, and then tap on it.
  3. If prompted, enter your security lock or passcode.
  4. Tap Reset Face ID, but if you’ve already done that, touch Set Up Face ID instead.
  5. Now, follow on-screen instructions to set up Face ID on your iPhone.

If for some reason, the Face ID issue still remains after this, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Reset all Settings to fix Face ID issue

There were also some iPhone owners who said that they were able to fix the Face ID problem on their devices by resetting all the settings. This will bring the phone back to its default settings or configuration without deleting your files and data. It’s safe yet very effective. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Touch Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.

Your iPhone will reboot after this, once it has finished rebooting, try to use the phone as you normally would to see if it still shuts down at some point. If it does, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Factory reset your iPhone

If the problem continues after the previous solution, then it’s time to reset your iPhone. A reset should be able to fix this problem, but before you actually do that, make sure to create a backup of your important files as they will be deleted. When ready, follow these steps to reset your iPhone:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed.
  9. Now enter your Apple ID password, and then tap Erase to proceed with the reset.

Wait until your iPhone has finished the reset, and then set it up as a new device.

When it comes to a Face ID issue that started after an iOS update, a reset should be able to fix it. However, if a normal factory reset does fix it, then you should restore your iPhone and depending on your location, it’s best to visit the Genius Bar to get the device checked by a technician.
