Before troubleshooting, try to access your email account through webmail (gmail.com). If everything works perfectly fine with the webmail but your Gmail app doesn’t, then there must be something on your iPhone that’s halting it from loading and working properly. At this point, you can eliminate software-related factors by carrying out the following procedures.
First solution: Quit and restart Gmail app on your iPhone XS.
In iOS, apps that were recently opened are usually left suspended and running in the background unless you end them. While keeping apps in this state may benefit in terms of multitasking or reloading of the same apps, it can also cause troubles especially when any of the background apps gets corrupted. In this case, you need to enable IMAP through these steps:
- Sign in to your Gmail account via webmail using your email address and password. You can do this on your iPhone or through a computer. If you’re doing this on your iPhone and is prompted to download the app, select the option to Go to the mobile site instead.
- Let your email finish loading the information then scroll down to the bottom of the page.
- Check the link beside View Gmail in: and then select Desktop.
- Select Settings and then select Forwarding and POP/IMAP option.
- Just tap IMAP to enable it. Otherwise, just toggle the IMAP button to turn this feature OFF and back ON again. This will help refresh the IMAP function.
After enabling IMAP, restart your phone and retry launching the Gmail app and see if the problem is gone.
Fifth solution: Delete your email account then set up again on your iPhone XS.

- Access Settings from the Home screen.
- Tap on Accounts & Passwords.
- Select Accounts.
- Tap the email account you want to delete then select Delete account to continue.
- Select Delete account or Delete from my iPhone if asked to confirm.
After deleting your email account, reboot your phone then set up your Gmail account again.
Last resort: Delete Gmail app from your iPhone and install it as new.
