Troubleshooting an iPhone that keeps lagging and freezing after an update

In this article, you will learn how to troubleshoot your iPhone that keeps lagging and freezing after a software update. There are only a few troubleshooting procedures you need to do before you can fix it. That said, here’s what you need to do:

First solution: Close Apps and then Force Restart your iPhone

There are times when there are already a lot of applications running in the background that your iPhone’s performance drops. If this is the case with your iPhone, then you can fix it by simply closing all applications running in the background and refreshing the memory by doing the Forced Restart. Here’s how…

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and stop at the middle. This will show you the app previews.
  2. Now, swipe up on the previews to close them.
  3. To force restart your iPhone, quickly press and release the Volume up button, and then do the same for the Volume down button. The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Power key for 15 seconds or until the Apple logo shows.
  4. Now wait for your iPhone to finish restarting.

Once the reboot is finished, try to see if your iPhone still keeps lagging and freezing. If it still does, then try the next solution.

Second solution: Check your iPhone’s Storage and for new update

If your device is running low on storage space, it will also affect its performance. But aside from that, the problem can also be with the firmware, so it’s better to also check for a new update and install it if possible. This is how you do those things…

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Touch iPhone Storage and check if there’s enough storage. If you only have around 2 GB, then deleted some of your files to free up some space.
  4. Go back to the previous screen, and then touch Software Update. If there’s an update available, then download and install it.

After making sure that you iPhone has enough storage space and that it’s firmware is updated, and yet it’s performance is still poor, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Factory reset your iPhone

If the previous procedures failed to fix the problem, then you are most likely dealing with some major iOS flaw that requires more advanced solution. In this case, your remaining options would be a factory reset and iOS restore.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed.
  9. Now enter your Apple ID password, and then tap Erase to proceed with the reset.
  10. Wait until your iPhone has finished the reset, and then set it up as a new device.

Most of the time, this is the end of any performance-related issues no matter how they started. However, if your iPhone still keeps lagging and freezing even after this, then there’s another thing you can do.

A DFU restore is always effective in fixing problems like this. It will bring your iPhone back to its out-of-the-box configuration and more often than not, any problem will be gone after this. So I hope you’ve already made a backup of your important files. Here’s how it’s done…

  1. Connect your iPhone to the computer then launch iTunes or Finder.
  2. While your device is connected, quickly press and release the Volume Up button.
  3. Then, quickly press and release the Volume Down button.
  4. Finally, press and hold the Side button until your iPhone screen turns black.
  5. Keep holding the Side button when the screen turns black and then press the Volume Down button.
  6. Hold both buttons for 5 seconds.
  7. After 5 seconds, release the Power button but keep holding the Volume Down button for another 10 seconds.
