Troubleshooting notifications that are not working after iOS 13 on iPhone XR

Setting up push and notifications alerts on our device is an ideal way to avoid not missing important calls, messages, appointments, and other stuff. But if your phone doesn’t notify you at all, it’s totally a mess. Either the Volume alerts are too low to be heard, your phone screen didn’t show push notifications, or your iPhone didn’t light up when receiving calls, these are notifications serious issues that need to be fixed.

Listed below are possible causes and potential solutions to fix notifications not working problem after iOS 13 on iPhone XR. Read on to know more about this article.

First solution: Reboot your iPhone XR. (soft reset)

Post-update glitches may have stopped your phone from showing and producing notification alerts. These flaws can be eliminated by restarting your phone. Follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold the Side/Power button and either Volume buttons simultaneously for at least 2 seconds.
  2. Release both buttons when the Slide to Power Off command appears on the screen.
  3. Drag the power off slider to the right to turn off your iPhone device.
  4. After 30 seconds, turn your phone back on by pressing and holding the Side/Power button again. Wait until the Apple logo appears, then release the button.

After the reset, cached files and corrupted data affecting your notification system should also be cleared out. To make sure that the notifications have been restored after the reset, try to send yourself a message and check if a push notification is shown on your screen along with its notification sounds.

Second solution: Check and manage the Ringer switch on your iPhone XR.

If the switch at the side of your phone shows an orange line, this means that you are on Silent Mode. Therefore, there is no sound produced when getting phone calls, messages, and other alerts notifications. To make sure that your iPhone’s notifications will be audible again, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Flip the ringer upward to set it to Ring Mode.
  2. Otherwise, flip the ringer switch downward to mute your phone shortly and then flip the ringer switch upward again to set it back to Ring Mode.

Ensure that the Volume level is also set to the level that is enough to hear your phone ringing when receiving calls, messages, and other notifications alerts. If needed, press the Volume Up button to increase its volume.

Third solution: Disconnect Bluetooth devices from your iPhone then turn off the Bluetooth feature.

Technically, the audio output of your iPhone device will be routed to the connected Bluetooth devices/accessories like earphones once paired. So it is possible that your phone is still connected to a Bluetooth device, or left on headset state after the iOS 13 implementation. Whichever has caused the notification alerts to stop working on your iPhone device, disconnecting the Bluetooth from your iPhone and disabling the Bluetooth feature will effectively correct the notifications not working problem. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. From your Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth menu.
  3. Scroll down to see the list of saved Bluetooth devices.
  4. Tap the information icon “i” next to each device and tap Forget this Device option to delete. Do the same to the rest of the Bluetooth devices.

After deleting all the saved Bluetooth devices, go back to Bluetooth menu and then toggle the switch to turn the feature off.

Fourth solution: Check and manage Do Not Disturb settings

Automatic system override inflicted by the major system update may have enabled DND or the Do Not Disturb feature on your iPhone. Whenever this feature is being enabled, notifications and calls from selected contacts and apps will be turned off. Therefore, your phone will not produce anything but silence during the set time DND will take into effect. If you see a crescent moon icon on your status bar, then you need to check DND settings and disable this feature. Here are the steps:

  1. Tap Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll to and select Do Not Disturb.
  3. Toggle the DND switch to disable the feature.

Make sure to reboot your phone after making necessary update to ensure that it will be applied properly. Then check your phone’s notifications if they are already working.

Fifth solution: Check and enable Apps alert notifications when needed.

If some of the apps are still not producing notification alerts even after disabling the DND feature on your iPhone XR device, it is necessary that notifications alerts for these apps are still disabled. To rule this out, check the Apps Notifications settings and make necessary changes as needed. Here is how:

  1. From the Home screen, launch the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down to and select Notifications menu.
  3. Search for the app/s whose notifications are not working.
  4. Scroll to Allow Notifications and then toggle the switch to enable this option.
  5. Under Alerts section, you may choose to enable alerts Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners.
  6. Do the same to the rest of the items/apps whose notifications are muted or not shown on your screen.

After making the necessary changes, reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XR using the steps provided above. The notifications for your apps such as Messages, Mails, Calendars and others should be working by this time. Otherwise, continue troubleshooting your phone if notifications not working issue has not been corrected by this process.

Sixth solution: Check for and install pending apps updates.

Enabling the alert notifications for your apps might not be able to fix the problem especially of these apps are already out-dated. These out-to-date apps can no longer meet the new system requirements and therefore, needs to be updated.

  1. From the Home screen go to App Store.
  2. Tap your Profile icon on the top-corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to Pending Updates section to see the lists of pending apps updates.
  4. Tap Update All to install all pending apps updates to your iPhone XR.

Reboot (soft reset) your iPhone XR once the installation of the pending apps updates had been completed.

Seventh solution: Reset all settings.

If the notifications on your phone are still muted after performing the given solutions above, performing full settings reset might be able to fix the problem. Try this out:

  1. From your Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Select General.
  1. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  2. Then select the option to Reset all settings.
  3. If prompted, enter your device code to proceed.
  4. Then select the option to confirm the full settings reset.

This reset won’t cause data loss, so creating a back-up is no longer necessary.

Your phone will reboot by itself after the reset and loads the original settings values and options. Don’t forget to enable the necessary features to use them again.

Last solution: Perform a factory reset on your iPhone XR.

If none of the given solutions rectified the notifications not working issue on your iPhone XR, the very last option you have to hopefully fix the problem is by performing a factory reset. Unlike any other resets, this method will wipe everything from your phone’s memory including all your critical files; restoring your phone to factory default settings. Being said, you need to back-up your phone to either iTunes or iCloud. Once set, proceed to do a factory reset. Here’s how you do it through the settings menu:

  1. From the Home screen, go to Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Scroll down to and tap on Reset.
  4. Select the option to Erase all content and settings.
  5. Enter your device passcode when prompted to continue.
  6. Then select the option to confirm the factory reset.

Wait until the reset has been completed. To use your phone as you normally do, follow the onscreen instructions and then set it up as new again. Don’t forget to enable the sound features on your phone and check if the notifications are already working.

What to do next if none of the given solutions work?

Notifications not working problem isn’t that hard to fix. In fact, some users were able to correct the problem by simply giving their phone a quick restart (soft/hard reset). But when nothing happens even after exhausting all the potential solutions above and you no longer want to do anything on your device, better call your service provider or contact Apple Support. Don’t forget to provide them detailed information on what had transpired on your end so you’ll not end up getting the same recommendations from their representatives.
