However, some owners have reported that Face ID is not working on their iPhones. The problem reportedly started after installing the iOS 13.2.3 update.

Such problem might be due to a minor software-related issue or a serious firmware problem. What you need to do is to troubleshoot your iPhone so that you can determine the reason why such issue occurs. That’s the key to knowing what to do to fix a core application or feature that’s not working anymore. Troubleshooting an iPhone X when Face ID is not working properly

We have looked into this problem a few times and if it started without apparent reason, then it must be pretty minor. Needless to say, you should be able to fix it on your own without bringing your device to a tech. In this post, I will share with you the solutions we’ve been using in fixing issues like this. With that being said, here are the things you need to do if Face ID is not working on your iPhone after the iOS 13.2.3 update…

First solution: Force restart your iPhone X

If the Face ID has been working properly prior to the update, then the problem could be just due to a pretty minor firmware issue. In fact, it might even be just due to a glitch. Glitches happen every now and then but they often occur after a major update, and that could be the case here. The first thing that you have to do is the forced restart. It’s a simulated battery removal that has been proven effective against issues like this. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button, and then the Volume Down button.
  2. The moment you release the volume down button, press and hold the Side or Power key for 15 seconds or until the Apple logo shows on the screen.

Your device will continue the usual boot process, so wait until it has finished rebooting. After that, try to see if  you can unlock it with your face. If Face ID is not working even after doing this procedure, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Reset Face ID and set it up again

Perhaps the current Face ID has not been set up properly, or it might have been corrupted. This also occurs every now and then, and it might be due to a firmware or software-related problem. The best thing to do is to delete the existing Face ID and set it up again. The fact is that it’s the most logical thing you can do at this point. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. To access Face ID, launch Settings from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down to find Face ID and Passcode, and then tap on it.
  3. If prompted, enter your security lock or passcode.
  4. Tap Reset Face ID, but if you’ve already done that, touch Set Up Face ID instead.
  5. Now, follow on-screen instructions to set up Face ID on your iPhone.

If for some reason, Face ID still does not work properly after this, then move on to the next solution.

Third solution: Reset all the Settings on your iPhone

It is also possible that some settings in your iPhone have been messed up and resulted in some inconsistencies that affected some of your device’s core functions and features. That might be the case here so it’s best to rule it out by resetting all the settings. This will bring your phone back to its out-of-the-box configuration and it might just fix the problem. Here’s how you do it…

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Touch Reset All Settings.
  5. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  6. Tap Reset All Settings at the bottom of the screen, and then tap Reset All Settings again to confirm.

Your iPhone will reboot after this, once it has finished rebooting, try to see if Face ID is not working even after this. If the problem remained, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Factory reset your iPhone

If Face ID is not working after doing the previous solutions and still giving your a hard time unlocking the screen with your face, then it’s time to reset your iPhone. A reset should be able to fix this problem, but before you actually do that, make sure to create a backup of your important files as they will be deleted. When ready, follow these steps to reset your iPhone:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Find and tap General.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen, and then touch Reset.
  4. Tap Erase All Contents and Settings.
  5. Tap Erase Now.
  6. If prompted, enter your security lock.
  7. Tap Erase iPhone at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Tap Erase iPhone again to proceed.
  9. Now enter your Apple ID password, and then tap Erase to proceed with the reset.
  10. Wait until your iPhone has finished the reset, and then set it up as a new device.

As long as your iphone has not been modified in any way, a reset should be able to make Face ID work perfectly again. But if the problem continues after this for some reason, then you are required to restore your iPhone.
